Welcome to “Bankers and Barbells”

If you had told my younger self that one day I’d be writing a blog about fitness and finance, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. Growing up, I wasn’t exactly what you’d call athletic. I was the nerdy kid voted “Most Intelligent,” carrying around an inhaler and avoiding anything remotely resembling sports. Fitness wasn’t something I was encouraged to pursue, and frankly, I didn’t think it was for me.

That perspective started to change when I hit my early 20s. Around the age of 23, I began to notice something: the way people age is directly tied to their lifestyle choices. It became clear to me that fitness plays a huge role in how we feel and function as we get older. I started to see the difference between those who stayed active and those who didn’t—and I realized I wanted to be on the active side of that equation.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing trainers who taught me the value of consistency, proper form, and the science behind hypertrophy training. It wasn’t long before I fell in love with weightlifting and eventually discovered rowing, which became another passion of mine. Both forms of exercise taught me the importance of discipline, structure, and pushing through discomfort—all lessons that extend far beyond the gym.

On the professional side, I’ve been working in community banking since 2005. During that time, I’ve noticed striking similarities between finance and fitness. Both require setting goals, sticking to a plan, and making incremental progress over time. Whether it’s building muscle or building wealth, success in either area comes down to consistency and making small, deliberate choices that add up to big results.

This blog is my way of bringing these two worlds together. It’s a space where I’ll share my journey—recovering from two knee surgeries, adapting after losing my gym to Hurricane Helene, and navigating fitness and finances in my early 40s. Along the way, I’ll offer practical tips, reflections, and insights that I’ve learned through trial and error.

Here’s a taste of what’s to come:

• Fitness Recovery: How I’m working to rebuild strength after injury and setbacks.

• Finance Strategies: Simple, actionable tips for budgeting, planning, and achieving financial goals.

• Intersecting Worlds: Exploring how fitness principles like tracking, consistency, and goal-setting also apply to managing money.

Thank you for taking the time to read and join me on this journey. Whether you’re here for the fitness tips, the financial strategies, or just to follow along, I’m glad to have you. Let’s tackle our goals—one lift, one dollar, and one day at a time.
